Growing Your Business
You’ve built a successful business, but are burning 80 hours a week running it. You want to take it to the next level but know you need to build a team to help you grow even more. Scary thought?
Trying to figure out the HR items you need to hire an employee can seem like you are trying to navigate your way through a bowl of spaghetti! So where do you start?
First, start by recognizing that you are not “trying to figure out this HR stuff”, you are building an HR process and infrastructure! …. just like you built a financial management and operations management process. Taking this point of view helps you get in the right frame of mind when charting the HR path for your business.
So why is HR necessary for your business?
Human Resources (HR) has a unique role and function in an organization, whose goal, beyond growing the business, is to keep an organization compliant with HR laws and requirements, develop employees and recommend ways companies can best maximize their people resources. HR practices span the entire employee lifecycle from the time when you are recruiting talent to the time when an employee leaves, and all areas of their employment in between. This means that an HR mindset will be important to all aspects of the employee’s tenure with your company.
How do I determine what I need for my HR process?
When building your HR function, it is important that you put the time, effort and investment in setting up your HR process properly. This is setting a solid foundation for your HR function so it can grow with your business and not be the bottleneck to growth or efficiency.
As your business evolves, your HR priorities will also evolve. In the building phase of an HR function, you are setting the foundation for HR to support your business, not hinder progress. During the building phases, you are most concerned with HR compliance and HR administration and the policies, procedures and practices you set will be foundational to all employment matters.
What resources are available to help me?
Building your HR function can be an overwhelming experience, but with the right focus and support, you will start to see how to arrange the pieces and parts of your HR function. There is no one size fits all HR solution. Just having an employee handbook is NOT enough. You WILL need to assess the unique HR matters relevant to your business. Its best to seek the advice of a qualified HR practitioner to help navigate these waters.
With the proper foundation, most of your daily administrative tasks will run on autopilot and you can rest assured that your employees and your business have the HR support you need for success.
